Revitalizing Interreligious Collaboration

Over the course of 2022, its inaugural year, the Culture of Encounter and the Global Agenda project took up the theme of interreligious collaboration. Through essays, interviews, dialogues, and a conference in Rome, project participants reflected on the constructive role that religious communities and interfaith networks should play in addressing the global crisis of division and war that Pope Francis diagnosed in his 2020 encyclical Fratelli Tutti.

In our divided and dangerous world, the world’s religious traditions represent key resources in building what Pope Francis calls a “culture of encounter” on a global scale. In an international system facing crises of effectiveness, stability, and legitimacy, religious communities and interfaith networks have an unprecedented opportunity to cooperate with states and other secular partners around global challenges including climate change, public health, war, and peace. In this working paper Thomas Banchoff argues that to realize these opportunities, faith communities will need to work together to alleviate their internal divisions, renew their leaderships, and creatively engage with younger generations.

Rev. Arturo Sosa, S.J., superior general of the Society of Jesus, delivered this keynote address at a conference on “The Culture of Encounter: An Imperative for a Divided World” held in Rome at Villa Malta on May 27-28, 2022. The conference was co-sponsored with La Civiltà Cattolica as part of the Culture of Encounter and the Global Agenda project.
